What is Discord
Discord is a free online chat app where you can interact with other groups online. Although Discord became popular by gamers, many brands have their own server that allows them to interact with their users. You can download Discord here.
Discord is not any different than any other online chat apps like Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, Instagram, or TikTok. It provides a space for like-minded individuals to chat and share ideas. These spaces are called servers.
But like any digital tool, there are several things you can do to help keep your kids (and yourself!) safe on Discord.
How does Arludo keep their Discord server safe
Joining the Arludo server requires a link and we only provide links to our users. Additionally, we have created a private channel within our server only for students. This single-use code is sent to parents when they purchase a worksheet.
Our moderators will give users a warning of inappropriate behaviour. Individuals will be banned if the inappropriate behaviour continues. We have a zero-tolerance policy for inappropriate behaviour.
Using these approaches, we have made our server as welcoming and safe as possible. But there are further things that you can do.
Is Discord age appropriate?
Although Discord has a minimum age requirement of 13, there is nothing stopping younger kids from joining. This is where parents need to be aware and also why we at Arludo send links to join our server to parents.
You can decide whether it is your child that joins the Arludo server, or you can join instead and be present when your child wants to interact with our scientists. This is the first and simplest way to keep your child safe.
Discord Safety Settings
There are several safety settings available to users that can be activated through the settings option. To reach the settings option, head to the bottom left hand corner of Discord and press the little cog button next to your name.
Pressing the cog button will take you to the settings panel. On the left, select Privacy and Safety. This will allow you to select the direct messages that you can see. Here, you should select Keep Me Safe.
Below that option are two toggles. Make sure you have the NSFW as off. If you want your child to only interact with other members of the server within the general chat (instead of being able to direct message one another), then also toggle the top option off as well. This will ensure that no one from the Arludo server can direct message your child and every conversation is visible to our moderators.
The next set of options allow you to select who can add your child as a friend. This will allow you to limit who can be friends with your child online.
And finally, Discord was initially made for individuals to be able to chat and interact with one another while playing videogames. If you want to remove this possibility, then also toggle both of the options below off.
Those are the major settings that you need to be aware of! Between the way we’ve created our server, and the options you select below, you can dramatically reduce the possibility of inappropriate interactions.
The only other aspect we suggest is to ask your child to share their discord every once in a while. This way you can check up on who their friends are online, how they are interacting with them, and whether they have joined other servers. As a family friendly provider, we have gone the extra mile to ensure the safety of our user. Some servers have not don’t that as they may not be meant for younger users.
Discord has also created a post that helps individual stay safe while using Discord. Take a further look there if you have any concerns.
If you have any other questions about our server, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We’ll help however we can. We look forward to seeing you on Discord!
